The small type of guitar is very common in many countries. Cavaquinho (in front), Ukulele and Timple (backside) are the examples of this kind. Firstly appeared in Spain Cavaquinho is a popular instrument in Portugal and it not only became widespread in the Portuguese-speaking countries but also in Polynesia and Hawaii. Instead of a headstock (like gituars) we find here the so-called ‘Leque’ (= fanplate). The Timple with its five strings and its convex bottom is the typical instrument of the Canary Islands. There it is very important for the accompaniment of songs and dances.
