The Tar is a long necked lute played with a plectrum in Iran, Central Asia and Turkey. It has a body looking like the number 8, a cover on the body and a handle with frets. ’Tar’ is used both in classical and folk music. It probably originates from central Asia. The instrument, on the right, comes from Azerbaijan and has eleven strings. These eleven strings are divided into three categories; melodic strings, voice strings and strings used for acompaniment. There are also extra five strings stabilised at the side of the handle. These five strings are not available among the ‘Tar’s coming from Iran (2 instruments left). The strings of these are arranged in two groups according to the ‘Unisono’ technique. The strings can be shortened by 22 frets. It is played by a plectrum one side of which is covered with beeswax. The instrument in the midst is ornamented with environment, dance and bird figures
