Renaissance Lute

It was one of the popular instruments in Europe during the Renaissance period. It showed up in Europe in 10th century; however, it is possible to see the same kind of instruments in Mesopotamia and Egypt in ancient time. The instruments became widespread. It was used for accompaniment and for playing in groups in the 15th century and was used with the same purpose in West Europe for 200 years. The body of the instrument in our inventory is built with 9 ribs. One single string is for the high pitched voices and six courses of doubled strings for dual sounds. The number of frets (made of gut) and strings changed in time. There is a tuner box at the end of the neck bending outwards. This instrument is a reproduction of an instrument produced by Hans Frei in the 16th century, displayed in the art history museum of Vienna.
