Domra and balalaika

The Domra (in front) hasbeen very common in Russia since 16th century. The name of the instrument comes from Tanbura, an Asian instrument. Its body, having a half-round shape, is formed with ribs. The number of  the strings can range from two to four like this instrument. The Domra is built in 4 diffent sizes. The Ukraine Balalaika (behind), the traditional instrument of Russia in ourage, undertook the Domra’s role in 1700 but it is commonly encountered nowadays. It is supposed that the Balalaika was formed by developing the Dombra. The body part is triangle, it has a flat base made of ribs. It is produced in six different sizes. This (Prime) Balalaikahas 3 steel strings.
