It has been known in India since nearly first millennium  (AD). It is a kind of zither which is native to India. This instruments has a wooden hollowed handle part and a little resonance tied to this handle. While it is used as a fretless instrument in Southern India, it has the movable frets of the sitar in Northern India and there are strings available to provide the resonance.
