‘Tanpura’ (right side), an instrument originating from North India, and ‘Tambura’ (left side,) an instrument from South India, are fretless instruments having totally four tuners two of which at the side part and the other two are in front of the instruments. They accompany songs and instrumental musics. During the accompaniment, the four strings are to make a sound in a specific rhythm consecutively. While the body of ‘Tambura’ is wooden, the body of the North Indian ‘Tanpura’ is made from calabash. A silk yarn is placed between the strings and bridge to produce a buzzing tone.
