Erhu Nanhu Jinghu

These three Chinese instruments with two strings are of the type ‘Huquin’. Huqin is the common name of bowed instruments originating from China with an open bottom board covered with snake- or lizard-skin. The neck part of the instrument passes through its board. The bow is between the two strings. While the bottom of the pipe made from bamboo is totally opend in Jinghu, there are holes at the bottom of the pipe made from wood in Erhu (left) and Nanhu (middle). The board of these instrumens is placed to the femur while being played. Probably the ‘Erhu’ was brought to China from Tibet during the Zhou dynasty (bc 1122-222). The Jinghu (right) plays an important role in the Chinese operas.
