Kundi.wpntr2018-12-19T18:19:15+00:00The characteristic feature of this instrument is to have a carved body as in semi-oval two-sided stringed instrument. This instrument is very common in the central African Republic. It is played too by the Mangbetu comunity in Congo who call it ‘Domu’. This instrument probably originates from there. The most of the ‘Kundi’ harps have human figures on them. The neck part is stabilised with copper wire and the neck part of the woman figure is stabilised in the same way. Copper nails are used as decoration. Unlike the most harps from this type, the cover which is made from animal skin does not cover up all the body; it only covers up the upper part and it stay stabilised as a needled and rubbed position. This type does not have a sound hole. ’Kundi’ is a combine word: ‘Khun’ (pure, natural) and ‘-ndi’ (play).
