Kamayacha

The stringed instrument ‘Kamayacha’ is rarely found in ‘Barmer’ and ‘Jaisalmer’, two cities in the Tar desert (Western Rajasthan). This instruments are usullay used for solos or to accompany a singer of the Muslim ‘Manganiars’. There are three thick strings and numerous resonance strings (their numbers can change) connected to the bottom part of the instrument. Usually the melody strings are played together. The body of this old instrument is made of the wood of a mango tree and is covered with goat skin. The tuners are partly replaced by the player. There were once 13 tuners for the resonance strings, today there are only 7. The instrument was painted red during a wedding to bring good luck. The bow of this instrument is longer than the bow of other comparable instruments.
