This old instrument (left), a kind of Turkish banjo, consists of six double strings. The handle of the instrument is fretless. The handle part whose structure looks like American banjo and Archlute can be seperated from the point it attache stothe body. It is played with a plectrum and the name of the producer is written on the side of the body. This instrument was firstly invented by Zeynel Abidin (1881-1947). It was introduced to Ataturk in 1929 and he named the instrument as ‘Cümbüş’, after that, Zeynel Abidin changed his name as Zeynel Abidin Cümbüş. Zeynel Abidin wanted this instrument to be played in classical music but this wish did not come true. However,’Cümbüş’ plays a very important role in folk music. It is a very popular instrument especially in gipsy cerenomies and weddings because it is more effective than trumpet and clarinet.
