Guqin

The most-well known and 3000 years old instrument of China, ‘Qin’ (mid) is a zither with seven strings (‘gu’ means ‘old’). An arched top is glued at the bottom of the instrument and there are two holes at this part to produce the sounds. This part is ornamented with note calligraphy. There is a half pipe inside the instrument made from bamboo, by this pipe, the sound goes out through the holes at he bottom. Two extra sound posts are also added to this instrument. There are several layers of varnish on the instrument. The strings have been made from steel since there was a cultural revolution but they were always made from silk before. 13 circle-shaped mother-of-pearl buttoms mounted at the top are used to calculate the length of the strings for harmonics.
