Kaval

Although there are different ideas about its origin, it is known to be the one of the oldest instrument of the humankind. Different versions of it can be seen in Middle east and far east. The end-blown flute, known as shepherd’s pipe, are made from common box (and rarely from livori, fig tree and plum tree). It is produced with eight holes one of which is at the sub-part and the other seven are on the upper part. It has two versions such as tongue end-blown flute and tongueless end-blown flute. There is whistle at end point of the tongue flute which is responsible for making sound. The tongueless one is a hollow pipe and the player produces the desired sound by blowing technigues. Shepsherds play this instrument while the animals grazes as it calms down the animals and they don’t leave the herd. This tradition is still common.
