Nyckelharpa

This instrument was widespread between Germany and Scandinavia since 16th century. Now it is found only in Sweden in our time. Original diatonic these instruments appeare since 1925 as chromatic versions with 12 chromatic resonanze strings. Its keys are attached to tangents which, when a key is depressed, serve as frets to change the pitch of the string. However the strings (melodic and the thick ones) on this instrument are played with a short bow. The body of the instrument is either made of one  piece of wood or – like this instrument  – as a box (base – ribs – top).
