Rabab

Originating from Afghanistan and having a rich ornamentation with mother of pearl and bones this short-necked lutes are played by pulling the strings. The body is carved out of a single piece of wood from the mulberry tree covered with animal skin such as goat. It has three or four melodic thick strings. These strings are made from nylon or gut and there are nine or thirteen sympathetic strings made from brass. There are sometimes hollow eggs inside the body for creating a special resonance.
