Originating from Austria and Germany the ‘Scheitholt’ is a simply produced thin and long box-shaped zither. The frets of the instrument are directly nailed into the instrument. There are totally 7 strings. Three of which are used to play and the others are for accompanying. One example for this type of instrument is the ‘Epinette des Vosges’ (at the frontside), which has its origin in the Vosges area of France. A further development is the ‘Scheitholt zither’ from Austria with an own fretboard (at the backside). An other type is the Citera from Hungary (see left side).
