Tanbur Setar

Probably originating from Asia the instrument called as ‘Tanbur’ on the backside has a egg shaped body and looks like ‘Cura’ ( a small version of Saz). The production of this instrument is so easy. The cover has small ornamentation on it. There are frets made from strings on its long neck. The instrument consists of three double strings.

One of the developed version of the tanbur originating from pre-Islamic period of Iran is Setar (in the foreground) with three strings. However, this instrument modern version has four strings. The forth string was added by a Sufi named Moshtaq Ali Shah in 18th century. The body of this small instrument is either made from a single piece of wood or it is made from some pieces of wood stabilised to each other by nails. Setar is played bu using the index finger of the right hand without a plectrum. It is a very respected instrument in Iran and it become common among the Sufis in mystic environment firstly.
