‘Cister’ was in fashion in the second part of the 18th century and appeared in different versions. The tuning includes always a triad. It is possible to observe a sound mechanism in this instrument used in England. This sound mechanism is known as the ‘Machine of Preston’. It is similar to the ‘Leque’ (= fan) of Portuguese instruments (look ‘Cavaquinho’). Different from the Leque this instrument has a clock key instead of a turntable. The Cisters having this mechanism is called as ‘English Guitar’. In the beginning of the 19th century Cisters lost their importance and since this time they have taken their place in Thuringia and the Harz region in Germany and in some regions of Switzerland as a folk music instrument.
