Pipa

This flat instrument is one of the commonly played instrument in China. Its neck and its body, all together, are made from only one piece of wood. Its slightly domed and outwards back part is made from a single hard wood piece. Six wedge-shaped frets are on the neck and 18 bamboo frets are affixed onto the soundboard. The four strings made from silk were played using a large plectrum in the Tang Dynasty. Later on the plectrum was then gradually replaced by the fingernails of the right hand. Pipa is an instrument which has been known for 2000 years.
