Saraswati Wina

The difference between the Vichitra Vina – a kind of zither from north India having a bar-shaped body – and the Sarasvati Vina, an instrument from South India, is that Saravasti Vina is a kind of a long-necked lute. There are 24 frets made from brass which are attached to the wide neck part of the instrument with wax. The neck passes through a hemispheric resonator made of wood. The tuning box is ornamented with a dragon head. There is a little box for coconut oil which is used for the left hand. Four main playing strings stretch from fine tuning connectors attached to the end of the resonator across the bridge and above the fretboard to four large-headed pegs in the tuning box. Three subsidiary drone strings cross a curving side bridge leaning against the main bridge. There is a second resonator made from a calabash at the top part of the instrument. This instrument is ornamented with ivory and gilded golden figures.
